Jaleo vs Border Grill Happy Hour: Which Is Actually Worth It?

On paper this looks like a clean matchup: two Latin-leaning restaurants by big-name chefs, both on the Strip, both good enough to plan an afternoon around. Jaleo is José Andrés's Spanish tapas flagship at the Cosmopolitan. Border Grill is the Mandalay Bay outpost of Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger, the Too Hot Tamales.

But as of mid-2026, only one of them has a happy hour you can actually count on. So instead of pretending this is a fair fight, here's the real situation and where to go depending on what you're after.

Border Grill's afternoon happy hour is a different story. The restaurant is open and busy, but its own menu has stopped posting a happy hour, and the third-party listings that still show a weekday 3pm deal don't agree with each other. We can't confirm it's running, so we won't tell you to build your afternoon around it. More on that below, plus better-verified Mexican options if margaritas are the goal.

Jaleo's Sangría Hour, the one you can plan on

Jaleo has been cooking Spanish tapas inside the Cosmopolitan since the resort opened in December 2010, and the concept traces back to the original Jaleo in Washington DC in 1993. That's rare history for a celebrity-chef room on the Strip. The dining room is built around live-fire paella, but for happy hour the action is at the bar and lounge.

Here's how Sangría Hour works:

Where: the bar and lounge only, not the main dining room. No reservation needed; they take walk-ins.
When: Sunday through Thursday 5 to 7pm, and Friday and Saturday it starts earlier at 4:30. Monday adds a second, later window, a reverse Sangría Hour from 9 to 11pm.
Drinks: $7 beer, $7 to $9 sangría (by the glass, and it also comes by the pitcher if you're settling in with a group), $9 wine, and $12 cocktails.
Food: tapas in the $4 to $9 range, the fried-and-salty signatures sangría was invented to wash down, think croquetas de pollo and patatas bravas.

There's also a Bottle and Board deal pairing Spanish cheeses and cured Ibérico meats with a bottle of red, white, or sparkling wine if you want to stretch it into something closer to dinner.

This is a smart move for anyone who wants a taste of a genuinely good restaurant without committing to a full tapas dinner, which adds up fast here at regular prices. It suits couples killing time before a show at the Chelsea, solo travelers who'd rather eat at the bar, and Cosmo guests who want dinner-quality food at snack-hour prices. Seats go quickest in the hour before dinner service picks up, so arriving right at the start, especially on the earlier Friday and Saturday window, is the play.

The Border Grill situation, straight

To be clear, Border Grill itself is very much open. It has held the back corner of Mandalay Bay for more than two decades: two floors of open-air patio and an outdoor bar looking over the lazy river and beach pools, weekday doors at 11, weekend brunch until 3. The kitchen takes its Mexican food seriously even with half the room in swimsuits.

What we can't confirm is the happy hour. As of mid-2026 the restaurant's own menu page doesn't post one. Older third-party listings still show a weekday deal starting around 3pm with beer, wine, and appetizer discounts, but they conflict with each other and with the venue's current menu, so we're not going to print prices we can't stand behind.

What Border Grill does currently promote is worth knowing if you're already headed there:

If margaritas and Mexican are the real goal

The honest read is that people choosing "Jaleo vs Border Grill" usually fall into two camps. If you want Spanish tapas and sangría, Jaleo above is the answer and there's no contest. If you were leaning Border Grill because you want Mexican and margaritas, don't gamble on an unconfirmed window. These three all have happy hours we can verify:

China Poblano sits in the same building as Jaleo, inside the Cosmopolitan, and it's also a José Andrés room, a playful Mexican-Chinese mashup. Happy hour runs daily 4 to 6pm with a $13 Salt Air margarita (his signature), a $13 classic margarita, $7 beers, plus food like a $5 frijoles taco, $4 chips and salsa, and $8.50 quesabirria. This is the easiest pivot if you're already at the Cosmo.
Hussong's Cantina at Mandalay Bay is the verified margarita play if you're set on that resort, but note it's a late-night deal, not an afternoon one: Sunday through Thursday, 9 to 11pm. Expect a $10 Original Margarita, $6 draft pints, $8 street tacos, and a $13 Baja-style ceviche.
Cabo Wabo Cantina at Planet Hollywood covers the afternoon slot: Monday through Friday, 3 to 5pm, with half-off house margaritas, sangrias, and draft beers, plus half-off select appetizers.

Bottom line

If you want a happy hour you can actually plan around this month, go to Jaleo. The Sangría Hour is confirmed, the food is real, and the daily availability is unusually generous for an upscale Strip room.

If you specifically wanted Mexican and margaritas, skip the guessing game at Border Grill for now. Walk over to China Poblano in the same casino as Jaleo, or, for Mandalay Bay, catch Hussong's late-night margarita hour instead.
